Programs with Children

Southwest Service Dogs offers programs that allow children (Student Trainers) ages 11-17 to assist with training the dogs. Student Trainers learn patience and consistency as well as how to be a trusted leader for their service dog in training.

The Student Trainers go through a curriculum developed by Dr. Bergin (Assistance Dog Institute). These training "camps" are intense learning experiences for the children. They also serve as fundraisers for the organization. For the first few weeks Student Trainers focus on theory and methods, alternating with "hands-on" experience in the classroom, until they gain adequate experience to handle their "trainees" and problem-solve in public.

During the public phase Student Trainers take the dogs out in public, exposing them to a variety of situations that the dogs may experience when they are working in their future homes. Typical training outings are to libraries, recreational facilities, shopping malls, movie theaters, restaurants and grocery stores.

Student Trainers also learn about disabilities and how Service Dogs can be used to mitigate some disabilities. Whenever possible, Student Trainers meet and work with clients who are waiting for a Service Dog. They also may give presentations to groups in order to help others learn about Service Dogs and at the same time improve their presentation skills.
